Dogwood trees and bushes occur in the woodland around Sheepwater and
can be found in the recently planted hedge from the Common Car Park.
This area is chalky boulder clay and Dogwood is commonly found
in calcareous areas in the UK. The young stem growth is red especially
in sunlit conditions. Like Spindle the Dogwood was also used for
making skewers and formerly known as Dagwood or Skewer wood.
GUELDER ROSE Viburnum
only in Hainault Lodge Nature Reserve. The outer circle of showy white
flowers are sterile, and this character has been developed by plant
breeders to produce the Snowball tree. The inner flowers later produce
the bright red berries
