A look at the Forest of Essex, of which Hainault Forest was a part, from the time of the Norman Kings until disafforestation in 1851. For much of that period the Fairlop Oak proudly stood in the middle of a clearing and an annual Fair attracting thousands was held between 1725 and 1900. The eastern boundaries of the forest were marked by a series of stones, most of which can be seen today.

Following reafforestation, the new Hainault Forest was created and opened in 1906 since when various authorities have managed it.
