 Conservation

The nature conservation ranger team organizes many events and activities at a number of green spaces throughout the borough. All our events are FREE unless otherwise stated. For some events, booking is required.

A responsible adult must accompany all persons under the age of 16 on all events.

Volunteering Information

As you can see our   schedule is packed full of opportunities for you to take part in practical conservation tasks throughout the borough. Volunteering with us is a great way to get some fresh air and gentle exercise, meet new people and learn more about wildlife in the borough. Please note that we provide all the necessary tools and training on how to use them. Volunteers are free to work at their own pace and we provide plenty of tea and biscuits as an extra incentive! Please bring your own packed lunch if the workday takes place over lunchtime and wear old clothes and sturdy footwear.  Remember no experience needed, just enthusiasm!

If you are planning to come to any of our practical conservation workdays, please do ring or email beforehand so that we know to expect you and can bring the right amount of tools.

Important Information

Please be aware that some of our sites may not be suitable for those with wheelchairs, buggies, etc.  Also, most of our sites do not have toilets. Therefore it is very important that those with special requirements contact us before an event to find out about the accessibility of each site. Please wear sturdy footwear, particularly on guided walks.

Teachers

The nature conservation rangers can lead on a number of educational activities at various open spaces throughout the borough so please do get in contact if you would like to arrange a class trip.

Cleaner Air Champions

Please see below for details of an exciting new project being run by Sustrans to reduce local air pollution and improve the areas we live in:

Did you know that pollution is a big problem in London? Although we can’t see it the air we breathe caused over 4,000 deaths in the capital last year. As well as governments taking action, there are lots of things we can do to reduce pollution and protect our health.

Sustrans are looking for enthusiastic volunteers and volunteer groups to get involved and act as Cleaner Air Champions in their local community.

Cleaner Air Champions

We will provide training, support and resources to help volunteers:

-          Organise events and awareness raising activities

-          Reduce air pollution by helping others to cycle or walk more

-          Improve air quality by building green walls, launching anti-idling campaigns or any other great ideas

-          Protect people’s health by letting people know what actions they can take to avoid areas of poor air quality e.g. promoting walking or cycling routes away from busy roads

-          Monitor local air quality

We also have £10,000 of funding available to champions to help get ideas off the ground.

Guidance and Support

Sustrans will provide volunteers with support and training in their role. This will include:

  • Information about the causes and impacts of air quality
  • Support and resources to measure air quality in your local community
  • Guidance, support and funding to take action to improve air quality in your local community.

We are particularly looking for volunteers and voluntary groups in Barkingside and Fullwell Cross, Wanstead and in Ilford around Winston Way as these are areas that are suffering from bad air quality.

For more information or if you would like to get involved please contact Kate Meakin on kate.meakin@sustrans.org.uk / 0207 780 7201
